A New Swap...

Here it is. I think I got the details worked out. This will be a Tag/Destash Secret Santa Swap. The idea is to sign up for the swap. After the sign-up is closed, everyone will be randomly assigned a Secret Santa. You will send your recipient an altered tag (theme below) and a grab bag taken from your own stash. Then you will receive a tag and grab bag from someone else. No one will be required to buy anything new. The idea is to have to make only one tag and destash a bit in exchange for some new to you products.

The tag: the theme for the tag will be Christmas. The challenge will be to use at least one rub-on on the tag. The tag can be any size and/or shape. Again, you'll only need to make one.

The grab bag: to keep things equal, I've put together a list of things to include. Again, these should be from your stash. They should be unused and complete if applicable. Handmade where applicable is okay, too, as long as it fits the category.

Please include the following:

20 6" x 6" sheets of patterned paper - that's 5 12"x12" papers cut down or 20 pages from a paper pad(s) or a mixture. I'm requesting 6x6 to keep the package a manageable size for everyone.
5 charms or other metal embellishments other than brads.
1 alphabet - can be rub-on, stickers, chipboard, etc. as long as it is complete and unused.
10 diecuts or punched shapes - these can be the same or different or a mixture and can be chipboard or patterned paper.
10 stamped images in black ink on white cardstock - these must be different images, unless you don't have that many stamps.
1 bling - this can be a set of jewels or pearls or a bling design or similar, as long as it is complete and unused.
10 fibers/trims/ribbons - this can be all fibers, all trims, all ribbons or a mixture. I'm leaving the length to your discretion. Any reasonable length is fine.
5 small (1" or smaller) or 3 medium (1" - 2") or 1 large (over 2") flower(s) - these can be prima or die cut or handmade or similar.
3 journaling spots - Pre-made, handmade, any size.
1 pocket or small envelope(coin size, etc)
and lastly, a surprise - just something you never used, not your style anymore, etc. A stamp or alpha or ink or other thing.

Also, this is a minimum suggestion. If anyone wants to add more, please feel free to do so.

Any suggestions to alterations of the list are welcome.

Open to residents of the US and Canada, only.

Freebie #4 is hand crocheted beaded lace, approximately 7". This lace was hand crocheted by me using cotton crochet thread and glass bead teardrops. It is one piece and cannot be cut. If you cut it, it will unravel. Use double stick tape or liquid fabric glue to adhere it to a mini book page or wrap it around a tag.

I have a zillion blank tags, so, I'm going to host a tag image swap to get rid of some of them. Please spread the word. I love the swaps that With a Grin does, so, I'm "swap-lifting" her swap. :)

Rules:

Very simple.
Open to residents of the US and Canada.
Sign up by leaving a comment on this post with your e-mail and first name and last initial.
I will leave this open until I get 25 participants or more. Once I get 25 participants, I will announce a closing date.
Participants will be divided into groups of between 5 to 8, depending on total number of participants.
Each participant will be required to send in a set of plain, standard shipping tags - one for each member of their group - with an image stamped on each tag in black permanent ink, such as staz-on. The tag can be sized to fit the image.
Each participant will then receive a tag from each member of their group.
I will not be a member of any group, but, instead, I will be including a tag for each participant of the swap.
Please mail your tags in a LARGE bubble envelope that can be reused to send tags back to you.

**SHIPPING INFO**

I will not be handling shipping like other swaps. Instead, I will be sending members a Paypal invoice for $4.00 (most swaps end up being between $3 and $4 to ship). If your package costs less to ship, I'll give you a refund. If your package costs more than $4.50 to ship, I will send you another invoice. This also makes it really easy to print shipping labels and saves a trip to the PO. :) If you don't have a Paypal account, please contact me to work something out.

**A DRAWING**

Extra good stuff - if i get at least 25 participants, I will hold a drawing for all participants. The prize will be: A Compendium of Curiosities by Tim Holtz. Some new news...

The new tag set for the 15th will feature an embellishment.

I added some pictures of a sample grab bag on the tag 01 post.

I have a new video. I sent Rina from Scrapstress(youtube) fame a RAK and I included this little canvas I made for her. I didn't want to put the video up until she received her package. So, here it is.

She has a much better view of it on her video(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gwy_GSXtn3Q). I want to thank her, so much, for making that video and mentioning my blog and such. Thanks, Rina! And, I'm so glad she liked everything. I just love her videos. She gets so into everything she talks about. Go check her out if she's new to you. :)

BTW, I will be making more of these little canvases and putting them up in my shop, soon. They are so much fun to make. I am also still trying to work up the courage to do a "live" video. Yikes. I will also be sending out more RAK's - also lots of fun.

I joined Marie of The Pretty Paper Boutique 's June tag swap. The theme was dress forms. This was my first swap. It was a lot of work, but, a lot of fun, too. Here is a preview of my finished tag.

There is a story I heard someone tell of when they wanted to get rid of a working large appliance - refrigerator or washing machine or something. He put it at the end of his driveway with a "free" sign on it. Sat there for days. So, he changed the "free" sign to say "$50". It was gone the next day. Human nature, go figure. You may catch the relevance of this story. You may not.

Someone twittered with a link to this video. I've watched it twice. Doesn't get old.

Yay! The journal has been claimed! No more worries.

Yesterday, we saw a bird flying backwards, the wind was that strong.

I definitely don't like the cold - do not miss that part of the Midwest.

Someone told me they will be giving the gift I worked hard and made for them for a secret santa exchange to their friend. I think that was supposed to make me happy. It did not. If you re-gift - one of my all time pet peeves - please don't tell the person who gave it to you for heaven's sake. That's just rude.

I won a giveaway from one of my all time favorite shops - the little red door. What a nice early Christmas present - more tiny houses for my collection. :) No pictures, 'cause I already uploaded today - it's a pain doing it more than once a day.

Okay, so I tried scanning some of the pages and I do not like how they turned out, either. The scanner is really distorting the colors. I miss my old scanner. So, back to the camera. My "assistant" isn't here this afternoon, so, I'll have to wait until tomorrow when the sun is out, again.

In the meantime, I really like this TED talk. Warning, it's a bit long, but worth it.

December Daily and surprise.

The good news is I finished 15 sets of pages for my December Daily album. But, they are not photographed, yet. I'm thinking of trying to scan them instead. I don't really like how the photos are turning out. I will be doing that later today and will post an update and/or pictures.

Also, I decided to announce the surprise mentioned in the first DD post. I have TWO sets of number stickers, so, I decided to make two albums and give one away. An important note, though, the giveaway album will have the same cover, the same papers, and the same numbers. But, it will only have a few of the embellishments that I have two of. So, you will get to decorate it even more with your own ideas.

I will officially announce the contest when I post the 25th page, hopefully, next week. My plan is to have people post comments and I will draw a number, but, I would like to get at least 50 comments to make it more competitive. So, if you know anyone who would like an album, please pass the word.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are very busy around here. No time for heavy crafting. So, no new pages to post today.

I did list a new item in the shop. Journaling tags for scrappers. They are made from card stock that has been stamped with journaling lines. I added one of my flowerlette embellishments to the top.

The new pictures are a better match for color. I'm keeping the foundation pages simple. I'll add more embellishing later.

The rub-ons at the bottom and the paper on the left are from a kit from KI Memories. I don't know who the paper on the right is from because I glued the back on before I checked. The number and stars are from Creative Imaginations.

Both papers are from the KI Memories kit. The number and ornament sticker are from Creative Imaginations. The ornaments on the left were stamped with a Hero Arts stamp in brick red ink distress ink from Ranger. "Ribbons" were made using a white gel pen and a red marker. Jewels are from Hero Arts.

December Daily Foundation Pages

I was going to post pictures of the cover and page 1 of the foundation pages, but, the pictures of page 1 did not come out at all. The page is red and the picture on screen was all orangey. So, I will retake those and some more pages later today.

In the meantime, here is the cover.

Details: 6" x 6"; Stampin' Up kraft card stock; "25 days of Christmas" and stars from Creative Imaginations; red "dec" and brackets from Making Memories felt alpha; "09" stamped with Inkadinkado Brenda Walton alpha clear stamp set and Colorbox olive green chalk ink; faux stitching with white gel pen.

When all the pages are finished, I will use my binderie to punch some holes and add rings to bind it.

Despite a busy day, I managed to get the covers and the first couple of pages cut down - loving my new paper cutter. I'm going with 6" x 6". I also got started on the cover. I hope to get it and pages 1-2 done and pictures taken tomorrow (or later today, depending on what time it is where you are) and put up on the site.

Two new projects...

I am starting two new projects this month.

Project number one: I discovered Ali Edward's December Daily project this past week. I only started reading her blog this year, so, I didn't participate last year. I thought it might be a fun way to use these stickers. I originally planned to do an advent calendar, but, this is close enough. :) I also didn't realize how many Christmas themed papers I have. So, I have an idea and will be building my own album. I have the papers picked out and will be cutting and assembling the "base" for the album to be filled in daily in December. I will be posting pictures of completed pages, hopefully, every day or so.

Plus, stay tuned for a little surprise to be announced when I post page number 25.

Project number two: In honor of Thanksgiving, I am calling November, thank you month. I have a lot of thank you stamps and am going to try to use each of them to make a bunch of thank you cards for the shop.

Just a very quick update regarding my absence. I have been getting two children settled into college life and a third started with homeschooling. Plus all of the usual distractions of life. It seems every week, what I planned to do and I what took priority have not been one in the same.

For instance, I have this week off from chauffeur duty (hubby is off work), so, I figured I would get a few very belated chores done around the house and...wait for it...wait for it...some new work to put in my shop. Silly me. Nope. Not gonna happen.

Anywho, I have some pictures to upload and some videos to pass along and some updates to the project to post. Next week?? Yeah, we'll see. :)

p.s. More baby lizard news. Hubby found one, one morning, a couple of weeks ago - in one of my yarn bins. Yikes and how'd that get there?

Baby gecko

Today, we rescued a baby gecko caught between the window and the screen. It was about 2 inches long. It's not the first one, either. Some years ago, when the girls were little, we found about 5 or 6, about the same size as this one, trapped in the same window. Still don't know how they get in there. Once again, my daughter liberated it and we let it go to safety in the yard. I didn't think to take a picture until it was over.

It made me miss the geckos that shared our house in Hawaii. They never got bigger than 3 or so inches, but, they sure took care of the bugs. We'd find them up on the ceiling or walls or in the light fixtures. Occasionally, we'd find a petrified one sticking out of a power strip. Then, there was the time I accidentally painted one yellow and the time I accidentally chopped off the tail of another one with the lid of the washing machine. (they grow back, the tails do)

A WTHeck and a "well, that's just stupid"

Yesterday, Friday, we needed to take middle daughter to campus to get some things taken care of before the fall. It was going to take awhile, so, we grabbed a snack and waited for her in the student union. When I went to use the restroom, I found the lady's room was locked. Not the men's, just the ladies. Go downstairs and find the same thing. WTHeck??

This has happened before, when we were there on the weekend. It was after 3 p.m., there were still many students, etc., walking around. I don't get it. Why just the lady's and not the men's. If it's some safety issue, it's not very effective. It's just as easy to drag someone into the men's room, you know?

Also, if you watch the SciFi channel, you may have noticed the change to SyFy - still pronounced SciFi. Well, that's just stupid. We laugh and call it siffy 'cause that's what it says - siffy. I found out some supposed reasoning behind this move which also ties into why SGAtlantis was cancelled before it's time. Demographics. Now, this is what's going around the web from fans and some articles, but, apparently, we old fogies of 30, 40, and 50 aren't good enough for their advertisers. They're trying to get the young'un's. How to do that? Cancel good shows and change the spelling of your name to something "hip" (oh, and make and show really bad "B" movies that just make you laugh). It's just stupid.

Okay, I've said my peace.

Flowerlette #3

Flowerlette #3 is up. It is a special kind of card. I have a lot of alphabet sets - chipboard, stickers, rub ons, etc. - that I need to use. So, I came up with this idea.

This is a custom card. First, choose your letter. The front of the card will look the same except it will show the letter you choose. Then, choose your word for the inside of the card. It can be a name or any other word, e.g. A is for Awesome! Or, you can leave the inside blank and write your own word or message.

I have four new cards finished which will go up in the shop this week. The first one will go up tomorrow morning (if you're reading this on Wednesday, it should already be up) It is a generic "hello" card. The flowerlette cards will be OOAK, except this one. It is a run of 150 cards I did several years ago, but, didn't sell all. I have a number of them left and will list them until they run out.

BTW, the green yarn I used was hand dyed with lemon lime koolade in my dishwasher.

The other three are a set (each sold separately) of a sentiment card; a birthday card; and what I'm calling an alphabet card. Each was made using the same ink, hand stamped patterned paper, and, of course, include a flowerlette.

I am working on my first embellishment kit which will be suitable for card making or scrapbooking. It will include a set of flowerlettes for your use, plus, a number of handmade embellishment elements from the cards in the set. The kit will include a flowerlette "daisy" like the one from card #1 above; hand stamped sentiments from the other cards in the set; a hand stamped patterned paper from the card set; a journaling tag; an element of three (to be explained, later); and more.

I will also be listing some flowerlette mini note card sets and altered moleskine journals. Stay tuned.

Trader Joe's

This week we've been eating a lot of Trader Joe's brand name items. Some of our favorites are sweet and sour chicken - yum; spaghetti with Trader Joe's italian meatballs simmered in Trader Joe's tomato basil marinara sauce; and teryaki burgers made with Trader Joe's island soyaki sauce. I like how they change the "Trader Joe" on the label to fit the food - like Trader Giatto and Trader Jose.

During our last trip, they finally had the mini peanut butter cups in, so, I tried this recipe out. I think next time, I will add a bit more sugar as they weren't as sweet as muffins should be, but, otherwise they were pretty good.

BTW, aren't those cups cute? I found them on Etsy, but, unfortunately, they stick to the muffins/cupcakes/whatever you're baking. It doesn't help if you're still leaving half the muffin behind, you know?

And, last, here is a picture of the peaches I used to make that peach pie.

They're saturn peaches... I know! We found them at Sam's. So sweet and juicy, too. I will be getting them again.

Some more info on my new project - 1024.

My goal is to make a limited edition run of 10,000 flowerlettes. I already have a big pile waiting to be added to a project. They will all be made out of reclaimed sweaters including cashmere, lambswool, and other natural fiber. The flowerlettes will be used in cards and my new knit project; and, will be included in handmade embellishment kits for use in your own projects.

Now, for some extras and goodies. I'm starting a flowerlette fund. For each flowerlette sold, I will add 10 cents to the flowerlette fund. That's for every flowerlette, so, if a project has 3 flowerlettes, that 30 cents. I will keep a running total on my blog. Every time the total reaches a minimum of $20, I will donate that to one of my favorite charities.

Plus, I am going to have some giveaways. I have a lot of supplies I would like to clear out, starting with stamps and ink. I started using clear stamps awhile ago and found I don't like using wood mounted stamps so much, anymore. They've been sitting in my drawer, unused. Some are still new, in fact. The same with ink. I have a lot of ink pads I haven't used because I'm favoring a certain brand, right now, and that's all I'm using. My plan is to put together little packages of a stamp or ink pad and a few goodies and then have giveaway drawings for them.

Drawings will be free to enter, no purchase necessary. However, anyone who does purchase something from my shop will automatically receive two entries per listing purchased. I will have a drawing for every 25 flowerlettes sold and a special drawing with bigger prizes for every 100 flowerlettes sold. Anyone can enter for free, but, I will not hold the drawings until the 25th, 50th, 75th, etc., flowerlettes are actually sold. More details will be coming.

Both will start when the first flowerlette goes in the shop.

I lost a day.

Ughhh. I hate when that happens. I had all sorts of plans for yesterday, but, the universe had other ideas, so, I lost a day.

First, a pie...

This is my altered formula for a fruit pie. Today, I am making peach. I'm going to assume you know the basics of a pie. As in, get some pie crust, the fruit goes on the inside, lol, etc. I use Marie Calendar's frozen pie crust - love it - turns out perfect, every time. :)

To make this pie, choose your fruit and get enough to fill your chosen pie crust. It can be fresh or frozen, but, make sure it's plain without any extra sugar and stuff. You're going to need between 2 and 3 cups. Set aside. In a bowl, mix...

1/2 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Add your fruit and stir until it's completely mixed and covered.

Preheat oven to 400°F.

Pour your fruit mixture into the bottom crust and cover with the top crust. You can use your favorite method of top crust, just make sure you cut slits for venting.

Bake 20 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F. Bake about another 25 minutes or so until the filling is thickened. This is perfect for my oven - yours may be different, so, keep checking it.

Here is a strawberry pie I baked a couple of weeks ago.

It was super yummy. I don't like to put sugar or egg or anything on my top crust, but, feel free to do so.

Now, go make pie!

New things 3...shop renovation - sneak peek

I am finally getting started on the major project I have been planning for awhile, now. I will be adding a new line of products to my shop this week. As I have mentioned before, I am concentrating more on the paper side of paper and yarn. However, the paper project is based on a yarn project.

A couple of years, ago, I made a line of cards that included a small flowerlette crocheted out of cashmere, reclaimed from sweaters. I have a large number of leftover flowers. I also have a large amount of reclaimed cashmere, so, I decided to start a new project. I'm calling it - 1024 - pronounced 10...2...4 - as in 10⁴. That's 10,000 for those who do not wish to do the math. As in 10,000 flowers.

I am using these flowerlettes in all my new projects. Each new item in my shop will have a flowerlette incorporated into it. Even new knit items. I will be adding cards, embellishment kits, and a new knit item series.

Here is a picture of some flowerlettes and a sneak peek of a card not quite finished.

But, there is more to the 1024 project than just the flowerlettes. Come back tomorrow for another update...

New things 2...tiny houses

I have three new houses for my collection.

The small one with the green roof is from my favorite tiny house shop - the little red door. The "neighbor" house is from famous noodle and lou. I have wanted one of these little houses for a long time. The "true" house is from a new shop I discovered recently - humbleBea. I hope to get a couple more, eventually.

I've been meaning to do this for awhile, now. I'm adding a new feature. I love to bake and I have some favorite things I make both for dinner and desert. So, I've decided to start posting pics and recipes or links to things I'm making.

Sunday, we ordered pizza, so, nothing special there. But, I did make some of my cinnamon rolls for Father's Day.

The brown stuff is melted sugar.

This is my own adaptation of traditional rolls. It's very simple. My twist on it is to use this - http://www.pillsbury.com/products/rolls/Refrigerated/RecipeCreations.htm. I love how it's not sweet and so doesn't compete with the sugar cinnamon.

This recipe makes eight rolls.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. I used to use a pie pan to bake them in, but, recently I tried using a muffin tin and I like it so much better. So, get out your muffin tin and grease eight sections, really well with softened or melted butter - I like softened.

In a bowl, make up a mixture of equal parts brown and white sugar - I use about 1/4 cup each. Add about 1 or 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Stir until thoroughly mixed. Set aside.

Unroll the dough onto a flat surface. Spread the dough with more softened butter. Sprinkle the sugar mixture evenly on top of the butter. Roll or fold the dough into a pinwheel - reverse the direction that you unrolled it.

Cut into eight equal slices. Place one slice into each greased muffin tin. Sprinkle any sugar mixture that fell out back onto the rolls. Bake for 15-18 minutes depending on your oven.

Icing - mix about 2/3 - 1 cup powdered sugar with enough milk to make a pouring consistancy - I add a teaspoon or so of softened butter, too. Pour over the warm rolls. Enjoy!

Packaging

When I send an item to a customer, I like to dress it up with pretty and/or clever packaging. I'll wrap it in tissue to look like a giant candy. Or fold it in an origami envelope. I want it to look nice and be fun to open. And, I always include a thank you note. So, when I receive something from another shop, I'm kind of disappointed when it comes stuffed in a sandwich bag or just loose in the envelope without even a receipt or message.

So, how important is packaging to you? Talk amongst yourselves...

Collections pt 1

I'm a collector. My family would call it being a pack rat. My largest/oldest collection is a collection of frogs. Very specific frogs. But, more about them in part 2. I also collect small wooden boxes; tiny toy critters; tiny glass bottles; and more. Did I mention I like tiny.

My latest obsession is with tiny houses. These sit on the shelf above my desk.

The first one is one I made. It is about 2 inches high. I actually made more and sold the rest. I decided to keep this one and look for more tiny houses. The rest are from this shop the little red door. They are so cute. They are glazed ceramic and the smallest is only an inch tall.

I also like this shop: junque and these houses: wunderlust.

p.s. The beaded items behind the houses are mine and the bowl is by my daughter.

Studio redo pt. 1

I'm making some resolutions to blog more and add more items to my shop. So, here's off to a good start, I hope.

My "studio" is my dining area. There is a dining table in here, but, also three (yes, three) computer desks and all my craft storage area. (luckily, it's a pretty large room.) It's open to the kitchen and gets a lot of traffic. I decided to redo a number of things in here, including additional storage and new drapes/blinds for the window/sliding door. It's about half done. Here's a before of the storage wall. I thought I'd taken the whole thing, but, only got half. I know, it was a disaster.

Since then, I removed the cubicle shelves and added 4 more cubes to end up with this:

I really like my new paper trays. :) Wish I had room for more.

Some clutter from a card project I just finishes and haven't put away, yet. (The video tapes are awaiting review to determine what's on them, so, they will not stay there forever.)

I keep all my paper goods, card making/stamping supplies, and painting supplies in these cubes. Someday I might get around to labeling the drawers. Probably not.

Next on the list is my yarn storage which is next to my desk around the corner. You won't believe the "before" of that. lol.

Didn't realize how long it's been. You know how it goes. Tax time, etc. Oh, and my baby turned 19 on Thurs. I'm still in denial. Anywho, I have about a dozen ideas and issues I'd like to write about if I only had 4 extra hours in the day.

Tea Pockets and Girl Scout Cookies

Introducing - Pockets. First up, Tea Pockets. These are really fun to make. And, they're not just for tea, either.

Also, we looked for Girl Scout Cookies this week and found out that different areas of the country get different cookies. We don't get "real" Girl Scout Cookies - you know the ones with the fancy names - tagalongs, trefoils, etc. No, we get these crappy, full of corn syrup, generic, ones with names like - peanut butter cookies?!?!?! It turns out that there are TWO companies that make the cookies for the Girl Scouts and they ship to different parts of the country. So, I'm on the lookout for anyone with access to the REAL cookies. Anyone?? Bueller??

This is a new set of wash cloths. Included are three bamboo cloths. They are so soft, you wouldn't believe it.

I have some new work I need to photograph this weekend. Then, I will update my shop, hopefully, on Monday. I have a new series of knit "pockets" for credit cards or business cards and tea packets. I will also be putting up some bamboo washcloths - sooooo soft. :)

Also, I moved the notice on the right hand column up to the top. I will be adding suggestions for people to do to help stop the spiralling self-fulfilling prophecy of job loss. I noticed the news is finally doing stories about how one job lost affects hundreds and more. How skipping that Sunday brunch can lead to the loss of your own job. Please pass them on.

Here are some new things in my shop.

I put a bunch of new iCozies up. I actually had a purple one, too, but that one is now on middle daughter's desk.

I also made up a pattern for tissue cozies. Tissues included.

And, some face scrubbies. These are actually only 2 inches square. They are made from super soft bamboo.

I'm currently working on some wash cloths from the same soft bamboo. I'm also working on some mini "pockets" for credit cards, tea bags, and a wallet.

New work - 1000 Boxes

I've started a new project - 1000 Boxes. I will be making origami boxes for my shop. Each box is signed and numbered PLUS each box will have a selection of goodies inside including: stickers and mini envelopes from repurposed paper; matchbook notepads; tags; mini cards; other scrapbook embellishments; and more. Each box will be unique and contents will vary.

iCozies will be coming back this week. I redid them with a lining to be thicker and more secure. Also coming this week; cards and tags; plus more Snarlies.

I will continue to add Snarlies until I run out of eyes. Then, that will be it for Snarlies unless there's a demand.

We don't get much snow here. Maybe 3 or 4 times a year. But, it snowed yesterday. And snowed. And snowed. And snowed.
